When All
Else Fails -- Reach Within
I was born and raised into a
deep-rooted Christian family, and during my
childhood, my father pastored one of the largest
churches in the Sandhills area of Pinehurst,
North Carolina. I was quite active in the church
as a Sunday school secretary, choir member, etc.
Being in front of audiences may have
been the norm for my seven siblings and me, but
certainly not always easy.
I vividly remember one day when our
sizeable choir was having rehearsal. As we
practiced, my desire was to lead a particular
song. But obviously, other choir members had
someone else in mind and untiringly opposed my
desire. My immediate reaction was -- "maybe
I can't do this." Outside sources were
overshadowing and I felt like a fish in a sea of
hungry sharks.
I stood there, a young teen,
attempting to lead this song, but to no avail. To
no avail, because others' expectations of what I
could or could not do, initially dominated my
thinking.
I must admit, I was a bit nervous
and overtaken with fear, but somehow, my desire
conquered the fear and self-doubt. In their
minds, I was not the person to lead this song. In
my mind -- I was.
After the microphone was placed in
the hand of the other girl -- to the surprise of
the opposing choir members -- she could not
deliver. The microphone was placed back into my
hands -- and to the amazement of everyone --
against all odds -- I triumphed. Why? Because I
knew, I could.
You too -- have the inner strength
-- the inner power to triumph. It matters not
what others say or think -- only what you say and
only what you think. You will be amazed at the
power that lies within you -- the power that has
been within YOU from your very existence -- when
you reach within.
Always remember -- when all else
fails -- reach within.
