I found myself in countless job interviews, repeatedly facing the same question: “Where do you see yourself five or ten years from now?” My answer was always, “I see myself doing something to help people.” Despite my unwavering response, my specific calling and purpose remained a mystery. Others often tried to predict my future, but I had no clear direction. My unique calling and purpose were unknown to me.
After spending years working for an organization, I grew increasingly frustrated and unhappy. Each day, driving to work felt like a dark cloud was hovering over me. I would sit in my car, dreading another day filled with frustration and a lack of fulfillment. The thought of callous administration and a lack of managerial concern for employees only intensified my discontent. Deep inside, I felt a tugging sensation, signaling that there was something better for me, something more meaningful.
During these challenging times, I often spoke with my mother, who is also my pastor and spiritual leader. She provided me with encouraging words and scriptures to help me through the day. I taped these scriptures around my office to remind me that God had my back and that I would be okay.
Observing the interactions and moods of others at work, it became clear that most people, including myself, were not content with their daily lives. The common office theme was always, “Is it Friday yet?” or “Thank God it’s Friday!” I realized I couldn’t continue feeling this way and had to take action to change my path.
As an adult, wife, and mother, I grappled with the questions, “What am I called to do?” and “What is my purpose in life?” I desperately sought answers, refusing to live the rest of my life feeling stuck and purposeless. I prayed, read countless books, searched introspectively, listened to audiotapes, and sought others’ opinions. I made life plans based on dreams and desires for uncertain reasons, like obtaining wealth and establishing a certain social status. However, I was unknowingly trying to lead instead of following God’s lead.
When I finally understood that my calling and purpose would be revealed through seeking God and surrendering to His will, the answer came. As stated in Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV):
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
One day, while searching through my storage, I found boxes filled with high school paraphernalia from the 1980s. As I reminisced about my youth, I read heartfelt messages from peers in my yearbooks and senior books. These messages highlighted my natural inclination to help others, offering advice, making people laugh, and being a supportive friend.
In a moment of divine revelation, God confirmed that my temperament, passion, talents, strengths, and skills were uniquely aligned with my calling. I had been operating within my purpose all along. My personal journey revealed that my calling as a Helper and Healer was already being manifested through counseling, encouraging, and teaching.
